Decorative wooden trade signs were a common sight on shop fronts and taverns throughout the American colonies. The painted image usually depicted goods being sold and they often played on the name of the owner or the location. This sign is hand painted on one side of a solid pine panel. Floor coverings in early American homes included a variety of flat-woven carpets, among them the familiar rag rug.
