PENNY RUGS

Penny rugs date from the mid-19th century, and were generally used as decorative table rugs. The term "penny" comes from the large coins that were used as templates of the multicolored circles that were layered and appliqued to the rug with blanket stitch embroidery. Our handmade penny rugs are designed for use on the floor. Hand appliqued wool "pennies" on a wool face, with a cotton binding and backing. Imported.
